It also had 3G (Third generation) and WLAN2 capabilities for faster data downloads.3 But the unique selling proposition of N81 8GB was the unique 3D multimedia menu of the phone which made the navigation of the phone very convinient. Industry watchers opined that the new navigation system was meant to rival the multi-touch screen of iPhone, though the N81 didn’t has a touch screen.
The estimated retail price of the N81 8GB was € 430 before taxes and subsidies. The N81 was the stripped down version of the N81 8GB with all the features of N81 8GB excluding the in built memory. But, the phone’s memory was expandable using an external data card. N81 was expected to be priced at € 360.4
The N95 8GB was the successor to another popular earlier model from Nokia, the N95. The N95 8GB had all the features of the earlier model like the 5 mega pixel camera, GPS, WLAN and HSDPA5 along with the 8GB internal memory. It was offered in the black color to differentiate it from the earlier version. The phone had a large 2.8 inch QVGA screen. The estimated price of the N95 8GB was € 560.6
Some experts wondered whether these new models could meet the competition from iPhone when it was launched in Europe and Asia. Apple was expected to launch the iPhone in Europe and Asia in the first quarter of 2008. Some felt that Nokia was banking on some features like 3G connectivity and the inbuilt high resolution camera to counter competition from iPhone.
Another important new addition to the features that Nokia was offering in its new models was the Nokia music store under the newly launched Ovi brand of online multimedia services. Through this, customers could download music, ring tones and games. The launch of the Ovi brand was being viewed as Nokia’s attempt to offer similar services as that of Apple’s iTunes music store.
But unlike iTunes, where the customers had to download the music on to their computers first and later copy them on to their iPods, the customers of Nokia would be able to download the music directly on to the phones using the high speed 3G networks. The launch of Ovi also marked Nokia’s diversification into other emerging businesses on the Internet.
