In 2013, Indian business tycoon, investor, and philanthropist Azim Premji (Premji), Chairman of the Azim Premji Foundation (APF), donated 12% of his stake in Wipro Ltd. – amounting to more than US$ 2.2 billion – toward education-focused activities.

APF was created in 2001 after Premji zeroed in on the primary education sector for his social initiatives, as he felt that primary education was fundamental to all other levels of education and had the maximum potential to contribute toward bridging the economic divide in the country.
