Popularising Case Method – Workshop by IBS

With a view to popularise case method of teaching in management education, IBS Hyderabad – a harbinger of case method of teaching in India – conducted a case study methodology workshop for faculty members of B-schools and corporate trainers at the Russian Center of Science and Culture, Chennai on 21st May, 2013.

The workshop was well attended with participants from some of the prominent B-Schools and corporate houses in Chennai such as ITM Business School, VIT Business School, IIKM Business School and L&T among others. Senior faculty members from IBS Hyderabad, Prof. Sriram Rajann and Prof. Padmavati, facilitated the workshop which proved highly beneficial to the attendees.

Case method of teaching is quite popular across the globe, particularly in the management discipline. Top tier global B-schools such as Harvard, LBS, Stanford, Yale and Ivey have been using case method extensively in their curriculum for decades. However, in India it is yet to gain wider acceptance. Many studies have established the superiority of case method, concluding that it not only develops analytical and presentation skills, it also prods students to question every business decision, apart from bringing in the latest business happenings to the class.

Lack of good Indian cases, proper training and institutional support are the factors impeding successful implementation of the case methodology in India. To overcome these problems, IBS Hyderabad has a dedicated department – IBS Case Research Center – that develops case studies and trains faculty in case study method of teaching. The Center has in its repository over 4,500 case studies, majority of them dealing with contemporary Indian business situations. Being one of the largest case study repositories, the Center’s case studies are widely used as part of management curriculum across the globe by Harvard, LBS, Stanford, Yale, INSEAD, Asian Institute of Management, the IIMs and other prominent global and national B-Schools.

The Center is organizing case study methodology workshops at all the major educational hubs in India for faculty members of B-schools and corporate trainers.
