INTRODUCTION |

It was the Annual World Economic Forum meet in 2014 at Davos, Switzerland. The Davos meeting brought together the world’s top business leaders, international political leaders, intellectuals, and journalists to discuss issues challenging the world. Among the dignitaries was Harvard Professor Joseph Nye (Nye), an American political scientist known for his international relations theory of Neoliberalism. As part of a panel on global Co-opetition (Co-operative Competition), he was responding to the view of a co-panelist, and said there should be a balance of soft and hard power. Giving an example, he said while China was flexing its hard power in the South China Sea over a dispute over some islands, it was losing Manila on soft power. Nye’s view received a quick response from a Chinese representative businessman who was also a co-panelist. Wang Jianlin (Wang), then the 4th richest man in China, said, “You shouldn’t accuse China in public. This is not polite.” .....
