Excerpts

Inception of STA and Ideaas

In 1992, Rosa started STA which focused on using solar energy for rural electrification. Rosa recognized that the major drawback in using solar energy was its high cost. To make it cost effective, Rosa decided to package the solar energy system with some utility just like he had packaged the mono-phase system with irrigation in Palmares...

Renting Solar Energy

With the success of the solar-powered electric fencing systems, Rosa decided to use solar power for rural electrification instead of persuading private electric companies to support his mono-phase distribution model. Rosa conducted research in that direction in the late 1990s. The STA conducted an extensive market study in six villages for eight months. They found that 65% of rural families spent at least US$ 11 per month on non-renewable energy sources like kerosene, diesel, and batteries whereas the remaining 35% could not afford to spend over US$ 10 a month...

Social and Environmental Impact

The TSFFA and Quiron projects improved the quality of life of their beneficiaries. Without access to electricity, people had had to use other sources of energy like candles, kerosene, and diesel. Breathing in the smoke emanating from kerosene lamps took a toll on their health...

Strengths and Challenges

The key strength of the STA and IDEAAS projects was the motivation of Rosa and his team to move forward despite having had to face several obstacles. Rosa's ability to convince the key stakeholders like politicians, bankers, local champions, and customers played a major role in the progress of STA and IDEAAS...

The Road Ahead

As of mid-2008, STA was involved in manufacturing the components required for SHS besides going ahead with the TSSFA project. IDEAAS expanded its activities to include more research work on all renewable energy sources...
