Background

Automobiles contributed to a significant share of the global demand for fossil fuels. The internal combustion engines (ICE) in the vehicles made use of gasoline or diesel, which were derived from petroleum. Overdependence on the finite reserves of fossil fuels forced many nations to explore ways to increase the fuel efficiency of automobiles and also to find alternatives to fossil fuel. Further, there was a growing concern over the harmful emissions caused by burning fossil fuels for transportation.
