"To break the cycle of poverty in Africa, access to clean water for drinking and water for irrigation must be improved. Pump Aid builds appropriate technology water pumps, called Elephant Pumps that can be maintained by poor rural communities without any outside assistance."1

- Kathryn Llewellyn, International Director, Pump Aid, in 2008.

A Social Innovation?

In December 2009, UK-based international water and sanitation charity, Pump Aid, announced that it had been chosen as the UK NGO partner of Live Earth 20102, the biggest fundraising event for water causes in the world. The Live Earth Run for Water global events, scheduled to be held on April 18, 2010, would see more than 100 countries participating and six kilometer running events being organized to raise money for water causes. London and Manchester were to host the UK events and all the funds raised were to go to Pump Aid projects in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Liberia. According to Kathryn Llewellyn, International Director of Pump Aid, "Pump Aid is proud to have been chosen as the sole UK beneficiary and partner of Live Earth 2010.

We’re so excited to be involved in such an ambitious event and the global push to raise awareness of water poverty. You can give water for life to one person for as little as £5 with Pump Aid, just think what we could achieve if 14,000 people raised £500 each - we could help 3.5 million people!"3
