Abstract Case Intro 1 Excerpts
"Since assuming office, Mr. Trump has waged war on intelligence agencies, immigrants from Muslim countries, the federal judiciary, "professional protesters," Barack Obama, Mexico, Australia and, above all, the media, the very "enemy of the people."
– Tim Wu, Professor, Columbia Law School, 2017.
Introduction
In January 2017, two Iraqi refugees, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, were detained at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The reason? They belonged to Iraq. Darweesh had worked in Iraq for the US government for 10 years while Alshawi was coming to join his wife who worked for a US contractor. The detention was a result of a ban imposed on seven Muslim-majority countries by the US President Donald Trump (Trump), barring their citizens from entering the US. This travel ban caused chaos and massive protests. Many green-card holders and human rights and activists' groups and organizations filed lawsuits against the travel ban that they alleged was unconstitutional. The travel ban was one of the many policies introduced by Trump after he became the 45 th President of the US in January 2017. Trump ordered a repeal of existing policies like Obamacare, froze regulations which were pending final approval, temporarily suspended premium processing for H-1B visas, etc. He also ordered that a concrete wall be built against neighboring country Mexico.
Trump's policies were met with mixed reactions from analysts and economists from across the world. Some appreciated Trump’s initiatives to repeal Obamacare; others were skeptical about the smooth running of these policies. Trump, during the 2016 Presidential election campaigns, had promoted slogans of 'Make America Great Again' and in this direction, he ordered immigration reforms, which he said were being introduced to protect the country and enhance national security. However, major outsourcing and IT companies condemned such actions. Many believed that Trump was the most disliked President in the modern history of the country. 3 There was growing concern among economists about Trump's reluctant attitude toward liberalization when he ordered the termination of some free trade agreements and introduced protectionist policies. Experts feared that rising protectionism across the globe and discouragement of globalization by big political powers like the US would slow down trade, thereby affecting global trade and economy. Many wondered whether a protectionist policy would solve the problems of the US and bring in employment, growth, and prosperity, and what impact it would have on global trade and economy.
