The worldwide automotive market was highly competitive and cyclical. Demand for 
automobiles in each market could vary substantially from year to year. Demand 
depended to a large extent on general economic conditions in a given market, the 
cost of purchasing automobiles and the availability and cost of credit and fuel.
 Toyota's vehicle unit sales in Japan decreased during fiscal 2002 mainly due to 
poor market conditions and increased competition from other domestic 
manufacturers. This decrease followed increases in Toyota's vehicle unit sales 
in this market during fiscal 2000 and 2001 driven by new models and the strong
