Introduction

In June 2019, American multinational technology company International Business Machines Corporation (IBM)’s business unit, IBM Watson Health , in association with its partners, unveiled 22 new scientific studies at the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago, demonstrating the progress made in providing clinical decision support using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cancer care across the world. One of the studies focusing on India-based multispecialty hospital Manipal Hospitals revealed that physicians on a multidisciplinary tumor board had changed their decisions in 13.6% of cancer cases based on recommendations provided by IBM’s cognitive computing system, Watson for Oncology . The tumor board had changed their treatment decisions as 55% of the times Watson provided more up-to-date and evidence-based information on the latest cancer treatments. Commenting on the studies, Nathan Levitan, chief medical officer for oncology and genomics at IBM Watson Health said, “Artificial intelligence technology is helping to enhance the way clinicians treat cancer today, in the real world. AI is helping multidisciplinary tumor boards make more informed decisions based on curated scientific evidence; it is surfacing critical insights and information that is not identified manually; and it is helping to improve patient satisfaction by delivering a comprehensive view of treatment options.” ..
