Abstract

Stripe Inc., which started as a payment gateway startup, had grown rapidly to become a global ‘financial infrastructure’ platform. Stripe evolved from processing basic transactions to facilitating real-time cross-border payments, and was looking at building infrastructure for online businesses with a focus on cryptocurrency and stablecoin payments. As Stripe grew to process about US$ 1.4 trillion global payments in 2024, it faced challenges in expanding further. It needed to decide on the next course of action – pursue vertical growth, grow its core payments further, or pursue cross border innovation.

Learning Objectives

The case is structured to achieve the following Learning Objectives:

  • Comprehend the economics and viability of platform businesses in global payments.
  • Examine the effect of regulatory breakup on fintech expansion strategies.
  • Assess the compromises between horizontal (infrastructure) and vertical (full-stack) expansion
  • Investigate how new technologies [crypto, Real Time Payments (RTP), AI] are restructuring the competitive environment.
  • Come up with critical viewpoints on network effects, environmental strategy, and product-led development.
