Abstract

The case traces the digital transformation journey of Qatar Airways, the state-owned flag carrier airline of Qatar. Faced with rising customer expectations and operational complexities, the airline leveraged digital technologies to enhance customer experience, improve operational efficiency, and build organizational resilience. Qatar Airways embarked early on its digital journey with the launch of the Smart Airport program in 2016 to optimize operational processes at Hamad International Airport (HIA), Doha. Over the years, as part of its digital transformation strategy, it updated its mobile app with advanced functionalities; introduced QVerse, a virtual travel experience platform for passengers; launched Sama 2.0, the world’s first AI Cabin Crew; an initiative called AI Skyways to embed AI across its operations; and a Digital Lounge for cargo services. To promote the brand and elevate the travel experience for customers, digital marketing campaigns such as ‘AI Adventure’ and ‘Sky Studio Challenge’ were launched. However, the digital transformation process at Qatar Airways was not without its challenges. These included navigating stringent aviation regulations, customer data safety and security concerns, cybersecurity risks, huge investments and infrastructure challenges, and shortage of technical talent.
