Introduction

On December 1, 2024, Stellantis, one of the largest automakers in the world, was in the news due to the sudden exit of its CEO, Carlos Tavares (Tavares). Commenting on the resignation of Tavares, also known as one of the influential leaders in the automobile industry globally, Henri de Castries, Senior Independent Director, Stellantis, said, “Stellantis’ success since its creation has been rooted in a perfect alignment between the reference shareholders, the Board and the CEO. However, in recent weeks different views have emerged which have resulted in the Board and the CEO coming to today’s decision.” Analysts pointed out that 2024 had been a difficult year for Stellantis. In addition to the sudden resignation of the CEO, the company was struggling with several other key issues such as sinking profits, strategic mistakes, and growing uncertainty in the global automobile industry. Stellantis saw a decline in its market share in key markets. In North America, its market share dropped to 8.4% in the first half of 2024 (June 30, 2024) from 10.0% during the same period in 2023. Its market share also decreased to 18.2% in the first half of 2024 from 19.0% in the first half of 2023 in the EU30 countries..
