Abstract Case Intro 1 Case Intro 2 Excerpts
Why Bees Matter
Bees play a crucial role in the pollination of many plants, including a large number of food crops. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, about 75 percent of the world’s crops and 35 percent of global agricultural land – that produce fruits and other seeds for human consumption are largely dependent on pollinators like bees. (Refer to Exhibit I for more details). As per experts, ecosystems could face significant disruptions and food production could decline drastically without bees and other pollinators. The role of bees is critical as they pollinate many of the very nutritious, micronutrient-rich foods, like fruits, some vegetables, seeds, nuts and oils, which would disappear without pollinators. Further, well-pollinated plants produce larger, more uniform, tastier fruits and vegetables. As per researchers, if pollination is managed well on small diverse farms, with all other factors being equal, crop yields could increase by 24 percent and thereby ensure food security..
