Introduction

In December 2014, Perdue Farms, the chicken processing company based in Salisbury, US, found itself the target of huge criticism from media and the public after a video about one of its farms was released on the website of a leading animal welfare organization, Compassion in World Farming. The film, shot at the farm of one of the Perdue farmers, disclosed the harsh realities of how chickens were treated on these farms and how they were exploited for producing bigger pieces of meat.
