"The BIXITM is the finest system in the world. It employs cutting-edge technology to offer an attractive and easy-to-use option for those seeking urban transportation that has less impact on the environment than traditional fuel-powered vehicles, and to act as the perfect complement to public transportation networks." 1

- The Société en commandite Stationnement de Montréal.

"This is a unique concept that will allow any interested city to acquire a public bike system that can be rapidly set up on their territory with no technological development or infrastructure costs…. By developing the Public Bike System from a clean sheet, Stationnement de Montréal is in a position to deliver a high-quality, turnkey product that has been pre-tested to optimize efficiency, suitable for cities big and small,"2

- Alain Ayotte, Executive Vice President, The Société en commandite Stationnement de Montréal, in 2008.

"When lots of people use a communal resource - like, say, a cheap public bicycle-rental program - they tend to abuse it. So when the city of Montréal built its Public Bike System, nicknamed Bixi, the designers packed in all the technology they could find, in a desperate attempt to out-engineer human iniquity… Too bad they can't redesign the riders too." 3

- TIME Magazine, in 2008.

Introduction

On September 21, 2008, a new self service, rental public bike system was introduced in Montréal4, Canada, by the city's parking authority, The Société en commandite Stationnement de Montréal (Stationnement de Montréal), a public body, for improving the transportation system in the city.

The new bike system was inspired by similar concepts operating in various European countries, particularly the Vélib' program in Paris. As part of the test launch, only 40 bikes were introduced in four separate places in the city.
