Introduction
In October 2023, India-based multinational conglomerate Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) announced a revised maternity policy for its employees in India with the objective of improving the return to work rate (RWR) of employees going on maternity leave and also retaining female employees throughout their motherhood journey. As per company sources, the comprehensive policy was designed to cover key stages of motherhood – pre-childbirth, maternity, and post-maternity. M&M claimed to have set a benchmark in the manufacturing sector by offering a range of benefits designed to promote flexibility and career growth for women employees. Ruzbeh Irani, (Irani) President, Group HR, Mahindra Group, said, “It's not only about bringing in gender diversity but also about retaining gender diversity and making women feel that they don’t have to make a choice between their careers and their family life. Based on what we have learnt from listening to our women employees across levels, it was decided to adopt a more holistic view of this, by taking a five-year horizon.” ..
