Abstract

The case study examines how Remote Technology transformed its traditional performance management system into an AI-led continuous performance appraisal system, thus creating a more agile and transparent performance review cycle. This performance review transformation was driven by various challenges in Remote’s previous performance management system that had led to delays in providing employee feedback, recency bias, lack of consistency in the evaluations, and a high administrative workload. To solve these problems, Barbara Matthews, Chief People Officer, took charge of redesigning and developing a new performance management system. As part of the transformation, she implemented Remote Perform AI, an in-house AI-powered performance management tool integrated with workplace tools including Slack. The AI tool collected data on performance, created summaries for review, suggested areas for employee development, and allowed managers to do performance reviews in less than 48 hours while maintaining final performance decisions under human oversight. The case emphasizes that leadership, organizational culture, ongoing feedback, and training for both managers and employees played an important role in the effective implementation of the new performance cycle. The case study ends with Barbara’s intention to continue with the new performance evaluation system, not only in the interests of the organization but also in the belief that Remote's success could inspire other organizations to adopt a similar approach as part of their performance management system.
