Abstract
The case discusses how Sanofi S.A. (Sanofi), a France-based global biopharmaceutical firm, repositioned itself as an AI-first data-driven biopharmaceutical organization integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics systems across its pharmaceutical value chain. Sanofi under its former CEO Paul Hudson (Hudson), had rolled out strategies that integrated AI into modernization of research, clinical development, manufacturing, and commercial decision-making as part of a broader digital transformation initiative that began in 2019. However, as Sanofi embarked on its AI-first strategy in June 2023, it accelerated AI adoption by launching various innovative AI strategies. Some of the major ones were launching Plai, an enterprise-wide AI-driven decision intelligence platform to integrate patient data; formulating the ‘3 AI Pillars’ framework to provide next-gen healthcare; introducing Modulus, a plug and play model for biotech manufacturing; launching the third digital accelerator in Lyon, France, to research on virtual production simulations, real-time monitoring, and predictive decision-making; and entering into some breakthrough strategic partnerships to develop generative AI tools tailored to drug development and other processes. Though these strategies garnered significant results in terms of cost and time savings, integrating AI into the highly regulated pharmaceutical environment presented several challenges for the company. Some of these were data governance issues, regulatory compliance, cybersecurity risks, and changing the organizational mindset. Another major challenge the biopharma major faced going forward was to see how it could continue to pursue the AI-first approach under its new CEO Belén Garijo (Garijo) as she simultaneously had to address ongoing structural and performance challenges, particularly accelerating a slow-moving drug pipeline, reducing overdependence on its blockbuster drug Dupixent, and stabilizing investor confidence amid operational and market uncertainties. Will the change in leadership affect the execution of the AI-first strategy at Sanofi?
