EFMD Case Writing Competition, 2006.

ICMR case study "The Betapharm Acquisition: DRL’s
Inorganic Growth Strategy in Europe" written by Rajiv Fernando and
Debapratim Purkayastha, wins the first runner up prize in the John
Molson Case Writing Competition 2006, organized by the John Molson
School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. This case
discusses the rationale behind the acquisition of Betapharm by Dr.
Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL). It highlights the benefits of the
acquisition for both DRL and Betapharm, even though some analysts had
opined that DRL had paid too much for the acquisition. The case also
highlights the impact of changes in the business and regulatory
environment (domestic and international) on mergers and acquisitions.

ICMR case study "Carrefour’s Strategies in China"
written by Vivek Gupta and Indu P., wins the second runner up prize in
the John Molson Case Writing Competition 2006, organized by the
John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.
The case discusses the entry and expansion strategies of French retailer
Carrefour, in the Chinese market. It highlights the challenges faced by
the company in China. The case also discusses the competition that
Carrefour faces in China especially after Wal-Mart’s acquisition of
Trust-Mart. It includes a note on the Chinese retail industry.

School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.

ICMR wins
EFMD case award in Managing Risk Category 11th December 2005
ICMR Case Studies and Management Resources(ICMR) has won an award in the 2005
European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Case Writing
Competition, bagging the first place in the Managing Risk Category.
Professor Vivek Gupta and Gautam won the award with their case study
Allied Irish Banks – The Currency Derivatives Fiasco. The case
discusses how an employee of Allfirst Financial Inc., the US subsidiary
of Ireland’s leading bank – Allied Irish Banks (AIB) caused a loss of
US$ 691 million to the firm. It describes in detail how the fraudulent
trading activities and manipulation of records by the foreign currency
trader John Rusnak (Rusnak) resulted in such a massive loss. The case
brings out the complete sequence of events leading to loss and also
highlights the reasons for the loss, including the inadequate
supervision, control system deficiency and failure to review policy and
procedures. The prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at the Erasmus
Rotterdam University on January 27, 2006.

ICMR BAGS THE TOP AWARDS AT
THE
REGIONAL ASIA-PACIFIC CASE COMPETITION IN HONG KONG

of the ICMR Case Studies and Management Resources(ICMR), Hyderabad bagged the top award
(HK$ 25000) in the eighth regional Asia-Pacific case writing competition for their
case ‘DoCoMo – The Japanese Wireless Telecom Leader.’ Vivek Gupta of ICMR
won the first runner-up prize (HK$ 10000) for his case ‘FedEx vs. UPS in China
– Competing with Contrasting Strategies.’
The
eighth regional Asia-Pacific case writing competition was organized by the Vocational
Training Council’s Management Development Centre (MDC) of Hong Kong. The prize
presentation ceremony was held on 13th February, 2004. The prizes were sponsored
by Hong Kong Society of Accountants, Northwest Airlines and the American Chamber
of Commerce Charitable Foundation.
MDC
was established by the Vocational Training Council in 1984 to develop and promote
managerial effectiveness in Hong Kong. It undertakes research projects to determine
the development needs of mangers in Hong Kong and develops materials and programs
to meet these needs. The centre organizes case writing and analysis work shops.
Since
its inception in 1988, this case competition has attracted over 40 high quality
case submissions every year from leading business schools and management colleges
from Hong Kong, China, UK, Switzerland, USA and Canada. For the past four consecutive
years, The Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada
had bagged the top awards in the competition. Other participants who have won
awards in the competition in previous years are, Open University of Hong Kong,
Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, HK Baptist
University and Fudan University, Shanghai in China.
The
‘DoCoMo
(Business Strategy BSTR049)’ case discusses the highly successful business model followed by the Japan-based wireless telecom company. It details the company’s
I-Mode service, its 3G initiatives and the globalization efforts. The case also examines the problems DoCoMo faced due to technology and competition-related issues,
and its decreasing revenues due to market saturation. Finally, it discusses the company’s future prospects in light of the initiatives taken to retain the leadership.
The
‘FedEx vs. UPS (Marketing MKTG069)’ case discusses the entry and expansion strategies
of the two US-based logistics companies – FedEx and UPS – in the Chinese market. The case examines the contrasting strategies adopted by FedEx and UPS in their
efforts to establish and expand their operations in China. It also examines how the expansion strategies of both companies have changed with the improving business
prospects in China, following its entry into WTO. Vivek was also awarded a Certificate of Commendation for his case study "Nestlé’s Brand Management Strategies,"
at the Seventh Regional Asia-Pacific Case Writing Competition held in December 2002.
